I know we’re roughly 48 hours removed from the GRAMMYs and its continued piss poor representation of metal, but it turns out maybe we’ve all just been paying attention to the wrong overblown music award show. Our Canadian friends in the north have their own awards show and once again they’ve proven that they know what the fuck they’re doing when it comes to “metal/hard music.”
Earlier today, the Juno Awards announced its nominees for the 2024 Metal/JHard Music Album Of The Year award. And judging by the nominees that I’m about to rattle off, they know what’s up. I mean seriously, look at this list:
- Cryptopsy – As Gomorrah Burns
- Danko Jones – Electric Sounds
- Kataklysm – Goliath
- KEN Mode – VOID
- Voivod – Morgöth Tales
Cryptopsy?! Kataklysm?! Fucking KEN Mode?! It’s highly unlikely you’d see some of those acts get recognized by the American music industry. Not because they’re bad or unworthy of praise, mind you — but because the people that make these nomination decisions don’t know shit about fuck.
I mean really, look at that list and then compare it to the GRAMMYs nominees for Best Metal Performance (since there isn’t a metal album equivalent).
- Disturbed – “Bad Man”
- Ghost – “Phantom of the Opera”
- Metallica – “72 Seasons“
- Slipknot – “Hive Mind”
- Spiritbox – “Jaded”
Nothing but big names and an Iron Maiden cover to fill out the list. And that’s not even the worst rundown of nominees the GRAMMYs has coughed up for metal representation. Last year, Voivod won the Juno Award for Synchro Anarchy, so it’s cool to see them get another nod this year.
The Juno Awards will take place in Halifax, Nova Scotia on March 24 at the Scotiabank Centre.
So yeah. Congrats to Kataklysm, Danko Jones, Cryptopsy, KEN Mode, and Voivod. At least you can count on the Canadians to be the good guys in all this and do the right thing.
