Man, rock and metal cruises have been having a rough go of it, eh? I mean, you had the extremely unfortunate circumstances that took place on last year’s Headbangers Boat and now, you’ve got what happened with ShipRocked yesterday.
According to a report by Cruise Hive, the cruise ship currently hosting this year’s ShipRocked cruise festival suffered some damage yesterday while docked in Ocho Rios, Jamaica. Though the ship wasn’t supposed to be at the port for another day, the cruise arrived a day early due to a severe weather pattern moving through the area. And while the decision to dock kept attendees from being tossed and thrown about the ship during bad weather, it didn’t save the ship from damage, as strong winds and swelling water caused it to eventually make contact with the pier.
Carnival Cruises told Cruise Hive in a statement that everyone on board and ashore at the time of the incident was safe, despite the damage done to the ship.
“Carnival Magic was involved in an incident while in Ocho Rios, Jamaica on Tuesday morning, Feb. 6 when strong winds and swells caused the pier fender to collapse under pressure, and the ship made contact with the pier. The ship was alongside at 8:10 a.m. and the incident occurred at 11:00 a.m. There were no injuries, and all the ship’s services remained operational.”
With those on shore left to be taken care of by the company’s care team and local partners, the ship left the dock since weather conditions made it unsafe to remain there. Guests left on shore were forced to stay there overnight.
Eventually the cruise ship was able to come back to a nearby dock to pick up those remaining guests. The boat stayed at Ocho Rios on Tuesday night, with its visit to Grand Cayman ultimately cancelled.
Thankfully, no one was injured as a result of the incident, though they were for sure mildly inconvenienced. Here’s hoping the rest of the cruise will go smoothly, since they’re due to return to Florida this Saturday.
